The Department of Road Transport announced that as of Thursday, 3 October 2025, the suspension of roadworthiness certificates has begun for vehicles with pending airbag recalls that were not implemented within the eight-month deadline set in February.
Suspensions will take place in phases between 3 and 30 October, with different dates applying to each car brand depending on when official notifications were submitted by the companies to the Department and vehicle owners. The deadline for each affected vehicle can be checked on the ministry’s website at www.gov.cy/mtcw.
Nearly 17,000 cars affected
According to estimates, around 16,900 vehicles, about 20% of the original 81,000 subject to the recall, had not completed the process by the cut-off date of 30 September 2025.
The figure does not include cases where owners simply failed to respond. Toyota stands out with approximately 5,000 owners not complying, while Honda accounts for about 2,000 non-responses. Authorities have clarified that no extension will be granted for vehicles whose owners have ignored recall notices.
The Transport Department noted, however, that there is still capacity for more recalls to be carried out for vehicles that booked service appointments within the eight-month period, provided workshops continue working persistently and at full capacity.
