Employment in the broader public sector increased to 77,314 people in the second quarter of 2025, marking a 2.1% annual rise compared to the same period in 2024.
According to the Statistical Service of Cyprus, the total number of persons employed in the broader public sector is divided into 72,275 employed in General Government and 5,039 in Publicly Owned Enterprises and Companies. Within the General Government, employment stood at 55,208 in Government, 11,185 in Non-Profit Organisations, and 5,882 in Local Authorities.
Compared with the second quarter of 2024, employment in Central Government rose by 969 persons (1.5%) and in Local Authorities by 1,295 persons (28.2%), while employment in Publicly Owned Enterprises and Companies fell by 664 persons (-11.6%).
The Statistical Service attributed this shift to the establishment of the District Local Government Organisations (DLGOs) as of July 1, 2024, which absorbed the activities of Sewerage and Water Boards.
