At least 648 protesters have been killed during the crackdown by Iranian security forces, the Norway-based Iran Human Rights (IHR) organisation reported on Monday, warning that the true number could be far higher.

“The international community has a duty to protect civilian demonstrators from mass killings by the Islamic Republic,” said Mahmoud Amiri Mohaddam, director of IHR, commenting on the latest verified death toll.

The NGO stated that, according to some estimates, more than 6,000 people may have died, but stressed that the nearly four-day internet shutdown imposed by Iranian authorities has made independent verification extremely difficult.

The figures highlight the ongoing severity of the government’s response to nationwide protests, with human rights groups urging urgent international attention to safeguard civilians and uphold fundamental freedoms.
