Minister of the Interior Constantinos Ioannou highlighted the urgent need for immediate and coordinated European action on housing, speaking in Brussels on the sidelines of the EPSCO Council meeting.
He warned that the lack of affordable housing has become a “crisis affecting all of Europe” and could threaten social cohesion if left unaddressed. Ioannou noted that the results of the Danish Presidency will inform Cyprus’ own housing policies during its six-month EU Presidency.
Welcoming the European Commission’s commitment to present the European Affordable Housing Plan in December, the Minister said Cyprus will build upon the conclusions already reached. He emphasised that affordable housing will be a top priority, aiming for the Presidency to act as a catalyst in developing a European strategy.
Cyprus’ priorities include introducing financial tools, involving the private sector, increasing the housing stock, reactivating unused residential or commercial units, and creating a platform to share best practices among EU countries.
