The United Kingdom, Australia and Canada have formally recognised the state of Palestine as part of a an effort to revive momentum for a two-state solution, according to a joint statement.
In a video statement, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said: "Today, to revive the hope of peace and a two-state solution, I state clearly - as prime minister of this great country - that the United Kingdom formally recognises the state of Palestine."
"Today we join over 150 countries who recognise a Palestinian state," Starmer continued as he said the move is "a pledge to the Palestinian and Israeli people that there can be a better future".
"I know the strength of feeling that this conflict provokes," the prime minister adds.
"We have seen it on our streets, in our schools and conversations we have had with friends and family. It has created division, some have used it to stoke hatred and fear but that solves nothing.
"Not only must we reject hate, we must redouble our efforts to combat hatred in all its forms."
'The starvation and devastation are utterly intolerable'
Startmer added that Ttns of thousands have been killed, including people as they collect food and water.
"This death and destruction horrifies all of us."
Though some sick and injured children have been evacuated, amid increased humanitarian aid support - "nowhere near enough aid is getting through".
He called on the Israeli government to lift the restrictions at the border. "Stop these cruel tactics and let the aid surge in."
New momentum
Australia's Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said in a written statement the development "is part of a coordinated international effort to build new momentum for a two-state solution, starting with a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of the hostages taken in the atrocities of October 7, 2023."
Canada's Prime Minister Mark Carney in a statement posted on his X account, said:
"Canada recognises the State of Palestine and offers our partnership in building the promise of a peaceful future for both the State of Palestine and the State of Israel."
No role for Hamas
Albanese added that the President of the Palestinian Authority has "restated its recognition of Israel's right to exist, and given direct undertakings to Australia, including commitments to hold democratic elections and enact significant reform to finance, governance and education.
"The terrorist organisation Hamas must have no role in Palestine."
Additional steps, including the establishment of diplomatic relations and opening of embassies, will be considered as the Palestinian Authority makes progress on its commitments to reform.
"Already, crucial work is underway across the international community to develop a credible peace plan that enables the reconstruction of Gaza, builds the capacity of the state of Palestine and guarantees the security of Israel."
