Belgium has recognised the State of Palestine, joining several other countries. “Through this initiative, we continue to support international law, in particular the right of peoples to self-determination,” Belgian prime minister Bart De Wever said on Monday at a New York conference to promote a two-state solution, convened by France and Saudi Arabia.
Aim of the conference
The meeting sought to inject new momentum into diplomatic efforts to resolve the Middle East conflict on the basis of two states, with Israel and an independent, democratic Palestinian state living side by side in peace.
‘The two-state solution is not dead’
“The two-state solution is not dead,” De Wever underlined. “It is wounded, but it can be revived, and it must be for the good of both peoples,” he added.
France, the United Kingdom, Canada, Portugal and Australia have already announced recognition of a Palestinian state.
