“Α strong US–Greece relationship is good not only for the two countries but for the world. My goal as ambassador is to advance it,” said Kimberly Guilfoyle, urging audiences to “fasten your seatbelts” for forthcoming agreements.
Guilfoyle previewed new agreements and partnerships with the United States and signalled that the relationship is entering a results phase rather than symbolic announcements.
Energy and infrastructure focus
The ambassador outlined a broad energy agenda, announcing a December visit to Thessaloniki and citing Souda and Alexandroupoli as priorities. She said it is a major commitment to begin work on energy and that infrastructure must also be addressed.
“Our cooperation is not limited. It is the ties between people that make the alliance unbreakable,” she said, noting millions of Americans and Greeks who travel and support each other’s cultures and a shared belief that democracy powers the future.
Port of Piraeus and COSCO
Asked about COSCO and Piraeus, Guilfoyle recalled Greece’s economic difficulties at the time of the Chinese investment. She said she is exploring further cooperation opportunities at the port, adding that Greece and the Eastern Mediterranean are very important and that there is support from Energy Minister Stavros Papastavrou. She referred to preparatory work under way for the past ten months and to American company interest.
3+1 Format to continue
On the Greece, Cyprus, Israel and United States 3+1 format, she said the first meeting was not a one off. Another is expected in the next quarter and further meetings next year, sending a clear signal about the country’s energy focus. She cited active projects in energy, trade and defence, and highlighted plans to work with Greek shipowners on building vessels, training and education.
Guilfoyle announced that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio will visit Greece. She said there will be many visits and contacts that will demonstrate the strength of the relationship.
“We would very much like President Trump to come,” she said, adding that she would welcome the idea of a speech at the Acropolis. She said the people of Greece would receive the US President warmly and that he would be excited to be in Athens.
