Confusion for Voters in Larnaca Over Polling Station Changes

Confusion and inconvenience were reported on Sunday morning at two polling stations in the Drosia area of Larnaca, located in primary schools opposite each other.

The issue arose after authorities decided to separate refugee voters from local Larnaca voters, making it difficult for some citizens – particularly elderly voters – to locate their correct polling station. Several voters who arrived at the polling centre they had used in previous elections were informed on the spot that they needed to go to the opposite school to cast their vote.

Confusion on the ground

At one point, the situation led to frustration and delays. One elderly couple left the polling station stating they would not vote. Many voters who arrived at the two schools were only then told they needed to go elsewhere.

The situation proved particularly challenging for elderly voters and those with mobility difficulties, who were forced to move between the two locations. The couple, after waiting for several minutes and being redirected multiple times, chose to leave without voting, expressing disappointment at not being informed in advance about the changes.

Staff at the polling stations in Drosia made efforts throughout the day to assist voters who were unaware of the new arrangements and to minimise disruption caused by the changes.
