Montenegro’s European perspective will be at the centre of talks, the country's President Jakov Milatović will have with Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides, during his visit to Nicosia next Monday, Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis said on Friday, describing the visit as a reflection of the positive momentum in bilateral ties between the two countries.
Speaking to reporters at the Presidential Palace, Letymbiotis said the visit comes only weeks after the establishment of a special working group tasked with the technical preparation of Montenegro’s Accession Treaty, which has already held its first meeting in Brussels.
“This development marks a decisive step in Montenegro’s accession process and constitutes a significant political success for the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU, with a substantial impact on the EU enlargement agenda,” he said.
Developments in Western Balkans
He added that the Cyprus Presidency had contributed decisively to securing a timely decision “of clear strategic importance”, paving the way for the next phase of the process and reinforcing efforts to revitalise the EU enlargement process in the Western Balkans.
Letymbiotis said the visit forms part of ongoing high-level contacts between Cyprus and Montenegro, recalling Milatović’s official visit to Cyprus in June 2024 and Christodoulides’ working visit to Montenegro in April 2025.
He noted that the latter was “President Christodoulides’ first trip” in the context of preparations for Cyprus assuming the Presidency of the Council of the European Union, underlining the importance Cyprus attaches both to Montenegro and to “the European perspective of the Western Balkans”.
According to the Government Spokesperson, the two Presidents are also expected to exchange views on developments in the Western Balkans and on the importance attached to “the stability and European course of the region”.
Strengthening relations
On the bilateral front, Letymbiotis said the visit represents “an important opportunity” to further strengthen relations between Cyprus and Montenegro.
Discussions will also focus on prospects for deepening economic cooperation, particularly in trade and investment, shipping, sustainable tourism and the organisation of business forums.
“The visit of the President of Montenegro confirms the positive momentum in bilateral relations, as well as our country’s active role in the European enlargement agenda,” Letymbiotis said.
