DISY buoyed by election result as party figures urge Demetriou to seek re‑election

Senior party figures and DISY voters say Annita Demetriou should seek re‑election as President of the House of Representatives following the party’s strong showing in Sunday’s parliamentary elections.

DISY leader Annita Demetriou on Tuesday briefed DIKO leader Nikola Papadopoulos on the upbeat mood within her party and the prevailing view among party officials and supporters that DISY should again stake a claim to the House presidency.

According to information obtained by Politis, the leaders of DISY and DIKO held their first contact since the parliamentary elections, discussing post‑election developments and the issue of the House presidency. The same sources said Demetriou conveyed to Papadopoulos the sense of euphoria within DISY following what the party views as a major electoral victory. Papadopoulos, for his part, said he would relay the discussion to DIKO’s collective decision‑making bodies.

DIKO is the sole surviving partner of the government in parliament after EDEK and DEPA failed to reach the electoral threshold for a seat in the legislature.

DISY vibing

The issue of the House presidency has not yet been formally placed before DISY’s collective organs, nor has any decision been taken at leadership level. However, a dominant view is emerging that DISY should once again seek the post.

Among party officials and voters alike, there is a strong sense of satisfaction with the election outcome. Many see both DISY and its leader as the clear winners of the ballot. Party figures argue that Demetriou’s performance as President of the House over the past five years played a significant role in the result, a view they say is widely shared in society.

They also point to a public opinion survey on the House presidency in which Demetriou emerged as the most popular political figure, with support at 21%.

The prevailing sentiment within party ranks is that DISY should proceed in a principled and transparent manner, placing the public interest above all else. Party officials stress that Demetriou should seek re‑election without political bargaining or behind‑the‑scenes arrangements.

The dominant view is that Annita Demetriou should be a candidate for the presidency of the House regardless of decisions taken by other parties and irrespective of which parties ultimately choose to support her candidacy.
