Marinos Kleanthous alleged that figures linked to the Presidency supported rival party candidates, while stressing that despite tensions there is no question of leaving the government.

Marinos Kleanthous left pointed remarks about the stance of figures linked to the Presidency and close to DIPA, speaking on Politis radio 107.6 and 97.6 and the programme Morning Review with Katerina Eliadi

As he said, “people from the Presidency with whom we worked and who were close to us appear to have supported candidates of ELAM and DISY”, adding that he saw “government ministers at pre‑election gatherings of opposition parties.”

He noted that these issues “will be presented to the collective bodies of my party”, avoiding giving details, which he said he possesses.

At the same time, he argued that “it appears that forces seeking to maintain the status quo prevailed”, while also engaging in self‑criticism over the election result, stating that “we paid for our mistakes in the elections.”

“There is no question of leaving the government,” he said, although he acknowledged that participation in government had caused wear to the Democratic Party.

He also warned that “difficult and critical days are coming on the Cyprus issue” and that the President of the Republic needs allies in the National Council, stressing that DIPA was the only party within the government supporting a bizonal, bicommunal federation.
