Cyprus’ Foreign Minister, Constantinos Kombos, says he will use meetings in New York with counterparts from Europe, Africa and Asia to spotlight urgent priorities: progress on the Cyprus issue, preparations for Cyprus’ upcoming Presidency of the Council of the EU, and wider foreign-policy initiatives.
In a statement ahead of the UN General Assembly’s High-Level Week, particularly significant this year as it marks the UN’s 80th anniversary, Kombos said his programme combines formal bilaterals, agreed trilateral formats, and participation in UN-related events. Informal contacts, he noted, have already been under way in recent days and will continue through the week.
“The focus is on matters of direct concern to Cyprus,” he said, citing the Cyprus problem, the EU presidency preparations, and broader diplomatic priorities that Cyprus is advancing across multiple regions.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied the island’s northern third. UN-led efforts to reunify the island have yet to succeed; the last conference at Crans-Montana in July 2017 ended without agreement.
