Both motions of no confidence tabled against European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, one by the far-right group Patriots for Europe and the other by the Left, failed to gather the required majority during Thursday’s vote in the European Parliament in Strasbourg.
Following Monday’s debate, MEPs voted at noon on Thursday. In a post on X, von der Leyen welcomed the outcome, saying:
“I deeply appreciate the strong support we received today. The Commission will continue to work closely with the European Parliament to address Europe’s challenges, and together we will deliver results for all European citizens. United for our people, our values, and our future.”
With a clear majority opposing both motions, the far-right proposal was rejected by 179 votes in favour, 378 against, and 37 abstentions, while the Left’s motion received 133 votes in favour, 383 against, and 78 abstentions.
The number of MEPs backing the motions was only slightly higher than in July’s no-confidence vote, when 175 voted in favour, 360 against, and 18 abstained.
