Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis held his first official meeting with the new US ambassador to Greece, Kimberly Guilfoyle. Both sides highlighted energy cooperation as a priority, with the talks taking place on the eve of the Partnership for Transatlantic Energy Cooperation (P-TEC) conference in Athens.
Energy agenda
Welcoming the ambassador, Mr Mitsotakis said Greece–US relations are at a historic high and can go further. He called Greece a pillar of stability and underlined the country’s role as a gateway for liquefied natural gas, a strategic asset for both Greece and the United States. He also pointed to broad scope for new American investment, particularly in technology, and noted next year’s 250th anniversary of the US Declaration of Independence as a moment to celebrate shared ideals.
US messages
Ambassador Guilfoyle said it was an honour to be in Athens, noting that significant initiatives are planned for the 250th anniversary next year. She cited the 3+1 format of Greece, Cyprus, Israel and the United States as proof of the strategic partnership and said there are plans for Greece to become an energy hub in the Mediterranean.
The timing, on the cusp of P-TEC, places energy security and infrastructure at the heart of the bilateral agenda. LNG capacity, technology investment and the 3+1 cooperation track together frame Greece’s bid to deepen transatlantic ties while consolidating its role in regional energy networks.
