The Political Bureau of the Democratic Rally has decided not to include MP Nikos Syka on the party’s ballot for the upcoming parliamentary elections.
In a statement issued on Monday, DISY said the decision followed a recommendation from the party’s Executive Bureau. The Political Bureau adopted the recommendation during its meeting.
The party said the decision was taken by secret ballot. This option is provided for under the party’s Statute. Sykas is a sitting member of parliament. He had been expected to seek re-election under the DISY banner.
The decision follows a recent ruling by the Supreme Court. The court approved a request by the Attorney General to lift Sykas' parliamentary immunity.
The lifting of immunity allows authorities to investigate him in relation to a case involving alleged violence against his partner.
DISY did not provide further details about the vote or the discussions that preceded it.
No timetable has been announced for the completion of the investigation.
