Nikos Michaloliakos, a Greek politician and convicted criminal, is no longer in prison, according to Greek media reports. The founder and leader of the far-right party Golden Dawn was released following a ruling by the Lamia Judicial Council. He is now under house arrest and restrictive conditions, having cited health reasons in his application for release.
In October 2020, Michaloliakos and 67 other Golden Dawn leaders were found guilty by the Athens Appeals Court of leading a criminal organization. He was sentenced to 13 years in prison on October 22, 2020. His initial pre-trial detention began on September 28, 2013, just days after the murder of Pavlos Fyssas, and lasted until March 20, 2015, when his pre-trial custody was lifted after 18 months. The full completion of his sentence is scheduled for April 30, 2032.
Golden Dawn, once the third-largest party in the Greek Parliament, was officially declared a criminal organization and effectively dismantled following the landmark 2020 verdict. The party had long been associated with violent attacks, racist rhetoric, and openly neo-Nazi ideology.
It should also be recalled that more than a year ago, Michaloliakos had been sent back to prison after the annulment of an earlier decision granting him release.
