The Democratic Rally (DISY) has raised six specific questions to the government regarding the controversial video that has sparked intense public debate, calling for immediate and convincing answers as well as a full investigation into the case.

In a statement issued on Thursday, DISY said the revelations contained in the video are “shocking and extremely serious”, adding that society is watching “in disbelief” and demanding clear explanations from the government, which, it said, have not yet been provided.

The party acknowledged that the incident may constitute a malicious act that carries costs for the country. However, it stressed that the substantive questions raised by the video are “specific and unavoidable”.

The six questions raised by DISY

According to the statement, the government must answer the following:

  • Are donations being received in cash?

  • Were donations received in exchange for political or economic favours?

  • Is this how the Social Support Fund operates? Are donations solicited from the Presidential Palace?

  • Were donors approached in this manner?

  • Were false or inaccurate declarations submitted to the Elections Officer?

  • What exactly was said by the individuals featured in the video?

Concerns over transparency and accountability

DISY said the available information raises serious suspicions of entanglement, illegal activity and lack of transparency, centred on the Presidential Palace, close associates of the President and members of his family.

The party called for the immediate investigation of all aspects of the case, stressing that Cyprus can only be protected through full transparency, accountability and zero tolerance towards corruption.

Revival of legislative proposal

Finally, DISY said that what was heard in the video makes it imperative to revive its own legislative proposal concerning the fund associated with the First Lady. The party added that it will push for even more robust measures to ensure institutional accountability and transparency.
