The Informal Meeting of EU Ministers for Agriculture and Fisheries is taking place today and tomorrow in Nicosia, as part of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
According to the Secretariat of the Cyprus Presidency, Agriculture Ministers are meeting today at the Filoxenia Conference Centre. Under the chairmanship of Cyprus Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment Maria Panayiotou, EU ministers will discuss ways to strengthen the resilience and strategic autonomy of the EU agri‑food sector, as well as possible solutions to address the growing risks faced by agriculture.
The meeting will also be attended by European Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Christophe Hansen, the Chair of the European Parliament’s Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development, Veronika Vrecionová, and representatives of key sector bodies, including COPA, COGECA and CEJA.
On Tuesday, May 5, the informal meeting of EU Fisheries Ministers will be held, again under the chairmanship of Ms Panayiotou. Participants will include European Commissioner for Fisheries and Oceans Costas Kadis, as well as the Vice‑Chair of the European Parliament’s Committee on Fisheries, Paulo do Nascimento Cabral.
Discussions will focus on the future of the Common Fisheries Policy and the European Commission’s evaluation of the policy, which will be presented by Commissioner Kadis. EU ministers will have the opportunity to jointly assess the policy’s performance over the past decade and examine how it can continue to respond effectively to changing conditions in the fisheries sector.
