Fewer than one in three women aged 50–69 underwent breast cancer screening in Cyprus in 2023, according to Eurostat, ranking the country second from last among EU member states with available data.
The percentage of women in this age group screened for breast cancer in Cyprus stood at 29.75%. Screening rates were below 40% in Poland, Latvia, Cyprus and Greece, with Greece recording the lowest rate at just 14.5%.
In contrast, Denmark, Sweden and Finland reported screening rates above 80%, while Slovenia followed closely at 77.5%.
Cervical Cancer Screening
Cyprus was not among the 20 countries for which Eurostat published cervical cancer screening data in 2023. Among those countries, Sweden reported the highest rate at 77.7%, followed by the Czech Republic (74.7%), Slovenia (74.4%), Ireland (74%) and Finland (73%).
At the other end of the scale, the lowest screening rates were observed in Poland (10.9%) and Romania (6.2%).
Colorectal Cancer Screening
Eurostat also released data on colorectal cancer screening for 2023, covering 19 EU countries, though Cyprus was not included. Finland recorded the highest rate at 74.4%, followed by the Netherlands (67.2%) and Sweden (64.7%). Screening exceeded 50% in a further six EU countries.
Hungary was the only member state to report a rate below 20%, at just 9%.
While the age group for colorectal screening is not officially defined in health statistics, the recommended bracket is 50–74 years.
