MPs have raised concerns over support for children receiving home and hospital schooling, with new figures showing 289 secondary school students affected. Of these, 70% are absent from school due to psychological problems.

Left AKEL MP Christos Christofides stressed that teachers in specialized roles should not be reassigned “just because regulations say so.” “You cannot remove the teacher from the pediatric oncology ward, or the theatre teacher working with blind students,” he said, adding that psychology plays a decisive role in children’s treatment journey.
DIPA MP Alekos Tryfonides proposed the creation of digital classrooms and psychological support for both children and parents, underlining that no child should be deprived of their right to education because of illness.
Independent MP Andreas Apostolou called for clear protocols to be drawn up to address the specific needs of these students.
