A vessel participating in an international flotilla bound for Gaza approached the territorial waters of the Republic of Cyprus and requested permission to dock at Larnaca port, citing the need to refuel and humanitarian grounds.
Government spokesperson Constantinos Letymbiotis said in a post on X that Cyprus reacted “swiftly and responsibly”, applying the relevant protocols and procedures laid down in law.
Health concerns addressed
There were 21 people on board, nationals of various countries including EU member states and third countries. During docking, the crew reported two individuals with chronic health conditions. Authorities expedited processing to ensure appropriate care. An ambulance was called as a precaution; medical staff determined no hospital transfer was required.
Competent services carried out identity, documentation and security checks. Officials also ensured basic needs were met and provided consular assistance where requested.
“The Republic of Cyprus acted from the outset with the protection of human life in mind and with respect for international humanitarian law, consistently fulfilling its obligations under national and European legislation,” Letymbiotis said.
Cyprus expects to receive a new request for second Gaza flotilla vessel to dock at Larnaka port, the Government Spokesperson told the Cyprus News Agency.
