Oscar-winning American actress Diane Keaton has died at the age of 79 in California, a family spokesperson confirmed. No cause of death has been disclosed, and the family has requested privacy during this time.
Keaton rose to prominence in the 1970s through iconic roles in The Godfather and her long-running collaboration with director Woody Allen. She won the Academy Award for Best Actress in 1978 for her performance in Annie Hall, and her five-decade career spanned hit films including The First Wives Club, Father of the Bride, Something’s Gotta Give, and the Book Club series.
Born Diane Hall in Los Angeles in 1946, she was the eldest of four children. She adopted her mother’s maiden name, Keaton, when she began acting professionally, as another Diane Hall was already registered with the Screen Actors Guild.
Keaton began her career in theatre, appearing in the Broadway musical Hair in 1968. She later starred in Woody Allen’s Play It Again, Sam on stage and screen. Her breakthrough came in 1972, when Francis Ford Coppola cast her as Kay Adams, the partner of Michael Corleone (Al Pacino), in The Godfather. Keaton reprised the role in both sequels.
In 1977, she became a style icon with Annie Hall, winning the Oscar for her portrayal of the eccentric title character. Her off-screen partnership and long-standing creative relationship with Woody Allen continued through films such as Manhattan, Interiors, and Manhattan Murder Mystery.
Despite her success, Keaton often spoke of her insecurities, admitting in interviews that she disliked watching her own performances. She also battled bulimia in her early career, describing it later as “a mental illness I hid for years.”
Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, she balanced drama and comedy, earning another Oscar nomination for Something’s Gotta Give (2003). In later years, she remained active in film, TV, and even music videos, making a surprise appearance in Justin Bieber’s Ghost (2021).
Keaton never married and often spoke candidly about her unconventional path. “I’m the only one from my generation who stayed single all her life - and I’m grateful for that,” she said in 2019.
She had high-profile relationships with Woody Allen, Al Pacino, and Warren Beatty, and later adopted two children, Dexter and Duke.
Diane Keaton leaves behind her children and a cinematic legacy that helped shape American film.
