The Paphos district court has ordered an eight day remand for a 58 year old man in connection with the alleged attempted murder of a 26 year old outside a kiosk in Konia, while doctors say the next 48 hours are critical for the young man’s condition.

A Paphos district court on Thursday issued an eight day detention order against the 58 year old to facilitate investigations into an attempted murder and knife possession case involving a 26 year old man, injured late on Wednesday afternoon in Konia, Paphos district.

The suspect appeared before the court accompanied by his lawyer, Takis Simmilides, who did not object to the police request for an eight day remand.

Investigating officer Andronikos Tsappis told the court that the investigation is ongoing, with further statements to be taken and various inspections to be carried out. Announcing its decision, the court said investigators possess significant testimony that an offence has been committed.

In this case, the court noted, the suspect’s detention is considered necessary, as there is evidence linking him to the offence under investigation. The suspect was therefore remanded in custody for eight days, with the court adding that if procedures are completed earlier he should be released.

The incident under investigation by Paphos CID occurred at around 18:15 on Wednesday, outside a kiosk on the main road in Konia. Under circumstances being examined by the police, the 26 year old and the woman’s father met outside the kiosk, possibly by chance, and after an argument the 58 year old allegedly pulled out a knife and seriously injured the young man.

The 26 year old was initially taken to the Accident and Emergency Department of Paphos general hospital. Due to the seriousness of his condition, he was transferred by ambulance at around 21:00 on Wednesday night to a private hospital in Limassol, where he was examined by a vascular surgeon and is being treated in the intensive care unit. According to his doctors, the next 48 hours are considered critical for his health. The young man sustained multiple stab wounds to various parts of his body.

The 58 year old was arrested late on Wednesday but has so far not been cooperating with investigators.

The alleged attacker is believed to be the father of a young woman with whom the victim had a relationship in the past. Earlier on Wednesday, the young woman reported to the police that the victim had caused damage to the wheels of her car.
