Police have made a third arrest in connection with the attempted abduction of a 46-year-old man in Larnaca on Saturday, a case in which the complainant has said he previously served as a minister in Ukraine.

The latest suspect is a 46-year-old man who has been taken into custody to assist investigations, police said in a statement.

According to the announcement, all three suspects are to be brought before Larnaca District Court at 10 a.m. on Monday.

Second arrest on Sunday afternoon

On Sunday afternoon officers arrested a 34-year-old man under a court warrant as part of the investigation into offences including assault, causing actual bodily harm, attempted abduction, threats, extortion and unlawful possession of an offensive instrument.

Earlier on Sunday, police had detained a 25-year-old man after evidence emerged against him, leading to the issuing and execution of a separate arrest warrant. He is also being held to facilitate inquiries.

The case began after a 46-year-old Larnaca resident reported to police that at around 5 p.m. on Saturday he was attacked by three men outside his home.

According to the complainant, one of the assailants struck him with a bat, after which the three suspects allegedly tried to force him into their vehicle. The 46-year-old managed to resist and escape.

The investigation is being carried out by the Kofinou regional police station.
