Police are investigating the causes of a road collision in which 17-year-old Alice Nikolaou, a resident of Lymbia, lost her life. The fatal collision occurred on the road from Kofinou to the Limassol-Nicosia highway at around 2.30am on Saturday morning.
The 17-year-old was travelling, with four other people in the car – a 22-year-old driver, plus two male passengers aged 17 and 22, and one other 17-year-old female. Under circumstances still under investigation, the car veered off its path at the entrance to the highway, in the direction of Nicosia, struck a protective guardrail and overturned on the highway.
Police officers and members of the Fire Department rushed to the scene, where they were able to extricate the 17-year-old from the vehicle and transport her via ambulance to Larnaca General Hospital, where she later died.
The other four were also transported to Larnaca hospital. Three were discharged, while the 22-year-old driver remained at the hospital for medical examinations.
As part of the police investigation, the 22-year-old driver underwent a breathalyzer test for alcohol, which showed a positive preliminary result. However, during the final test, the driver did not provide a satisfactory breath sample, leading to his arrest for a public offence. He also underwent a drug test, which was negative.
The Larnaca Traffic Department is continuing the investigation.
