A 40-year-old man has been arrested after his 13-year-old son was seriously injured in a road accident in Athienou, with police examining the circumstances under which the minor came to be driving the vehicle.

According to the authorities, the father of the boy, a 40-year-old man, is the registered owner of the car and the person responsible for its custody. He was arrested under a court warrant to assist investigations into how the minor obtained the vehicle and drove it.

The accident occurred at around 10.30am on Sunday on a rural road in the Larnaca district. Under circumstances still being examined, the teenager lost control of the vehicle, veered off course, struck trees and overturned in an adjacent field.

Emergency services transported the boy to Larnaca General Hospital before he was transferred to Makarios Hospital in Nicosia for further treatment. Police said on Monday that he remains in serious but stable condition.

Larnaca Police spokesperson Spyros Chrysostomou said the 40-year-old was questioned, charged in writing and will be summoned to appear before the Larnaca District Court at a later stage. He has been released pending the hearing.

Police are investigating offences relating to unsafe storage of the vehicle, allowing a person without a driving licence or insurance to operate it.

Investigations into the case are ongoing.
