The New Year begins under blustery conditions, as the weather sets the tone for a windswept January 1 across much of Cyprus.

A yellow warning for strong to near gale winds has been issued by the Cyprus Meteorology Service for New Year’s Day.

According to the warning, between 9am and 6pm on January 1, westerly to northwesterly winds of force 6 to 7 Beaufort are expected, locally reaching force 7. The strongest conditions are forecast to affect the southwest, west and northern parts of the island, as well as inland areas.

Gale-force gusts of up to force 8 Beaufort are also likely in exposed locations, prompting authorities to advise caution, particularly for coastal activities and travel during the warning period.

Weather conditions are expected to gradually improve later in the day as the system moves eastwards.
