Three passengers due to depart from Larnaca Airport on Monday were arrested after a large quantity of tobacco products was found in their luggage.

According to a statement from the Customs Department, officers at Larnaca Airport carried out checks on the luggage of three departing passengers following an assessment of information.

The passengers were travelling to the United Kingdom. During the checks, officers found a total of 210 cartons of cigarettes. Each carton contained 200 cigarettes. Seventy cartons were found in each passenger’s luggage.

Customs said the cigarettes did not carry health warning labels in Greek and Turkish. This indicated that they were untaxed products.

The three passengers were arrested for offences committed in the act. Their luggage and its contents were seized.

Customs later said the passengers were released after an out-of-court settlement was accepted. This involved the payment of a financial penalty.

According to the announcement, the settlement amounted to €1,600, with a figure of €4,200 stated per person.

The case was handled by the Customs Department.
