An area of weak low pressure is affecting Cyprus, with successive weather disturbances expected to influence conditions across the island until Friday. Rain, isolated thunderstorms and strengthened winds are forecast, while dust transport in the atmosphere is expected from Thursday.

Current weather conditions

Today, the weather will initially be partly cloudy to locally mostly cloudy, with a chance of isolated showers, mainly in western areas. Gradually, conditions will become more unsettled, with localised rainfall and isolated thunderstorms expected. There is a possibility of small hail during thunderstorms.

On the highest peaks of the Troodos, sleet may occur. Winds will blow south-westerly to westerly, moderate to strong at 4 to 5 Beaufort, although locally during the morning they will be weaker, at around 3 Beaufort.

Winds, sea state and temperatures

During the afternoon, winds in windward coastal areas will temporarily strengthen further, reaching strong to very strong levels of 5 to 6 Beaufort. The sea will be slight to moderate.

Temperatures will rise to around 19°C inland and on the northern coasts, around 20°C on the south-eastern and eastern coasts, around 18°C on the remaining coastal areas, and around 8°C in the higher mountain areas.

Weather overnight

Tonight, weather in the western half of the island will at times be mostly cloudy with isolated showers, and thunderstorms cannot be ruled out, particularly along the coast. In other areas, there will also be intervals of mostly clear weather.

On the highest peaks of the Troodos, snowfall or sleet is possible. Winds will blow mainly south-westerly to north-westerly, weak to moderate at 3 to 4 Beaufort, and at times strong in windward areas, at 4 to 5 Beaufort.

The sea will remain slight to moderate, though locally rough in western and northern areas. Temperatures will drop to around 9°C inland, around 13°C on the western coasts, around 11°C on the remaining coastal areas, and around 2°C in the higher mountain areas, where local frost may form.

Outlook for the coming days

On Wednesday and Thursday, the weather will be at times mostly cloudy, with periods of local rain and isolated thunderstorms. On Friday, rain and local thunderstorms are expected, gradually affecting all areas.

During the three-day period, snowfall or sleet cannot be ruled out on the highest peaks of the Troodos.

Temperatures will remain at similar levels and will continue to range slightly above average seasonal values.
