After a prolonged delay in adopting advanced artificial intelligence, Apple is planning to upgrade its digital assistant Siri into a full chatbot later this year, according to Bloomberg News. The report comes just days after the company confirmed that the new version of Siri will be based on a model developed by Google.

The chatbot, currently known internally under the codename “Campos”, is expected to be integrated into the iPhone, iPad and Mac, sources familiar with the matter told Bloomberg.

Central to Apple’s AI strategy

The overhaul of Siri is seen as a key pillar of Apple’s broader push into artificial intelligence, following the lukewarm reception of its Apple Intelligence platform in 2024.

According to the report, Campos is built on one of the most advanced versions of Google’s Gemini model, internally referred to as “Apple Foundation Model version 11”. The upgraded Siri will support both voice commands and text-based interactions.

Google gains access to Apple’s ecosystem

Google’s AI technology is already used in Samsung’s Galaxy AI smartphones through Samsung, but the agreement with Apple opens access to a far larger ecosystem, estimated at around two billion active Apple devices worldwide.

Google had reportedly competed with OpenAI to secure the deal with Apple. The financial terms of the agreement have not been disclosed.

ChatGPT integration to remain

In late 2024, Apple introduced support for ChatGPT across its devices, allowing Siri to route complex queries to the chatbot. According to reports, this functionality will remain available alongside the new Gemini-powered system.

Addressing privacy concerns, Google has said that Gemini will operate within Apple’s private cloud infrastructure and comply with Apple’s security and data protection standards.

AI hardware also in development

In a separate development, The Information reported that Apple is developing an artificial intelligence wearable device resembling a pin, equipped with cameras, a speaker, microphones and wireless charging.

According to the report, the device is not expected to reach the market before 2027 at the earliest.
