Julie Davis, the US chargé d’affaires in Ukraine who has been serving as acting ambassador, is expected to resign, reportedly over dissatisfaction with President Donald Trump’s approach to supporting Kyiv.
Davis had been appointed to the role on an interim basis in May 2025.
According to the Financial Times, the main point of friction was her disagreement with Trump’s position on aid to Ukraine, particularly his decision to scale back support.
The report also states that Davis has informed the US State Department of her intention to step down not only from her post in Ukraine but from the diplomatic service altogether, bringing to a close a career spanning three decades.
Davis also serves as US ambassador to Cyprus. She was reportedly taken by surprise by Trump’s decision to nominate Arizona businessman and Republican donor John Breslow as the next ambassador to Cyprus.
She is widely regarded as a respected diplomat, both among colleagues and members of Congress, particularly for her crisis management skills.
Before Davis, the US ambassador to Ukraine was Bridget Brink, who resigned following increased pressure from Trump on Ukraine. A key moment came during a public clash between Trump and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the White House in February 2025.
