President of the European Council Antonio Costa held a telephone conversation today with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez to express the European Union’s full solidarity with Spain.

In a post, Mr Costa stressed that “the EU will always ensure the full protection of the interests of its member states”. He also reiterated the bloc’s “firm commitment to the principles of international law and to the rules-based order everywhere in the world”.

Context of the exchange

The development follows Mr Sánchez’s reaction to what he described as “unilateral military action” by the United States and Israel against Iran, warning that it represents escalation and contributes to “a more uncertain and hostile international order”.

United States President Donald Trump subsequently responded with a threat to halt trade with Spain after Madrid refused to allow the US to use its military bases in the country to carry out attacks on Iran.
