Israel’s Defence Minister Israel Katz said on Tuesday that Ali Larijani, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, had been killed in an overnight strike.

According to a statement cited by the Israeli defence ministry, Katz said the operation took place on Monday night and formed part of broader efforts targeting Iran’s leadership.

“The prime minister and I have instructed the IDF to continue hunting the leadership of the terror and repression regime in Iran,” he said.

However, developments appear to cast uncertainty over the claim. Iran’s state-affiliated Tasnim news agency published a handwritten note attributed to Larijani on its Telegram channel, mourning members of the Iranian navy who were killed. The letter was dated March 17.

The conflicting accounts were reported by CNN, and no official confirmation of Larijani’s death has been issued by Iranian authorities.
