President of the Republic Nikos Christodoulides has convened a meeting of the National Security Council at 17:00 today, according to Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis.

In a post on X, Letymbiotis said the meeting forms part of the continuous and close assessment of developments in the wider region and the coordination of competent services.

Clarification on missile reports

Earlier, Letymbiotis addressed statements and reports referring to missiles allegedly launched in the direction of Cyprus, stating that this is not the case and that there is no indication of any threat to the country. He added that the competent authorities are closely monitoring the situation on an ongoing basis.

The clarification followed comments by UK Defence Secretary John Healey, who said in a televised interview that two missiles from Iran were launched towards Cyprus, where British military bases are located. Healey said the missiles were not believed to have targeted UK bases but described the incident as evidence of indiscriminate retaliatory action.

He noted that security protocols were activated immediately to protect personnel and infrastructure and stressed that the safety of British forces remains a priority. Healey also reiterated calls by UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer for Iran to halt its missile attacks, step back from escalating actions in the region and abandon its weapons programmes.
