Tertiary education schools now also play a significant role in establishing Cyprus as a regional centre for studies, offering an important cycle of study programmes. At present, alongside the country's universities, Cyprus has 4 public and 41 private Institutes of Tertiary Education (ISTE). ISTE institutions offer academic and vocational study programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate level, as well as shorter programmes of study. Short-cycle programmes lead to a Certificate (one year of study), a Diploma (two years of study) or a Higher Diploma (three years of study). All study programmes offered by ISTE institutions are evaluated and accredited by the Cyprus Agency of Quality Assurance and Accreditation in Higher Education (CYQAA).
