A former prisoner of war from 1974 revealed to his wife shortly before his death that he had been raped by Turkish soldiers, the head of the 1974 Prisoners of War Association told the House Refugees Committee on Tuesday.
At the same meeting, Deputy Minister of Social Welfare Tina Pavlou said discussions had taken place on creating a registry of women and men who suffered abuse during the 1974 Turkish invasion.
Association President Vassos Christou said that, according to what the former prisoner's wife had confided to him, her husband had never spoken about what he had endured, despite the fact that they lived together for decades and had four children.
He said the man disclosed shortly before his death that he had been raped by Turkish soldiers. His wife later decided to share the testimony herself in order to "ease her burden" and, as she said, "so that her husband's soul may also find peace".
