2021 Faneromeni Primary School closes permanently after 162 years. The decision to lease the building to the University of Cyprus School of Architecture was implemented in June 2021. The primary school officially closed on 16 June and the gymnasium on 18 June.

2017 General Healthcare System law approved. The House unanimously passes the GESY law on 16 June 2017. The system was implemented in phases starting March 2019.

1998 Unified Defence Doctrine. Greek F-16 fighter jets land at Paphos Air Base for the first time as part of the Greece–Cyprus defence doctrine.

1998 Andreas Papandreou Air Base inaugurated. The base in Paphos becomes operational with the landing of four F-16s and two C-130 aircraft.

1972 Zenon Severis appointed Minister of Health. He served from 16 June 1972 until July 1974 and again in the transitional government.

1972 Ioannis Christofides appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs. He joined the Makarios government on 16 June 1972.

1972 Odysseas Ioannides appointed Minister of Agriculture. Appointed by Archbishop Makarios as Minister of Agriculture and Natural Resources.

1960 Union of Journalists launches first strike. The newly formed union organised a strike on 16 June 1960 over workers’ rights.

1943 AKEL calls for enlistment. AKEL urged members and Cypriots to join the Cyprus Regiment in the anti-fascist war.

1943 Land reform committee established. A committee was appointed to improve land use systems in Cyprus under colonial administration.

1943 Cypriot volunteers join anti-fascist war. Over 800 AKEL members enlisted in the British army following the party’s call.

1801 Edward Clarke visits Cyprus. The British mineralogist arrived on the frigate Ceres and documented Cypriot life, wines and customs.
