Gladstonos Street in Limassol will be transformed into a space for walking, cycling, play, creativity and socialising on Sunday, 20 September, as part of an event marking European Mobility Week.
The event, titled “Car-Free Day”, is being organised by the Limassol Tourism Development Company (ETAP Limassol), with the support of the Deputy Ministry of Tourism.
According to ETAP Limassol, Gladstonos Street will be closed to motor vehicles from 11am to 7.30pm, between the Pentadromos traffic lights and its junction with Karaiskaki Street.
The closure will give priority to pedestrians, cyclists and users of other forms of sustainable and low-impact transport.
Activities planned for all ages
A programme of activities for children and adults has been organised, with the aim of combining information, entertainment and active public participation.
Among the activities will be a “Traffic Education Park for All”, designed to promote awareness of road safety, as well as a “Sustainable Mobility Zone”.
The programme will also feature a live mural, with graffiti artists creating artwork during the event.
Live performances by solo performers from the Diamantidou School of Music, Dance and Drama will also take place, alongside games and activities for children.
Focus on sustainable and accessible mobility
The organisers said the activities would focus on sustainable mobility, accessibility, safety and the coexistence of different generations.
The event aims to highlight the need for an urban environment that can serve people of all ages and accommodate different ways of getting around the city.
The initiative is being co-organised by Limassol Municipality, Friends of the Earth Cyprus and OPU (Organisation for Positive Urbanism).
The event forms part of European Mobility Week, an annual campaign promoting cleaner and more sustainable urban transport.
