Saloon Car Sales Rise 24% in April, Hybrids Take 51% Share in First Four Months

New saloon car registrations increased in April, while hybrid vehicles strengthened their position as the leading fuel category in the first four months of 2026.

 

Saloon car registrations in Cyprus rose by 24.2% in April, reaching 3,632 compared with 2,924 in April 2025, according to figures released on Friday by the Statistical Service.

Total motor vehicle registrations also increased, reaching 4,733 in April, up 22.1% from 3,877 in the same month last year.

Growth in the first four months

In the period January to April 2026, saloon car registrations rose by 14.0% to 14,259, compared with 12,509 in the corresponding period of 2025.

Of the total saloon cars registered during the four-month period, 4,800, or 33.7%, were new vehicles, while 9,459, or 66.3%, were used vehicles.

Rental cars, however, recorded a decline of 14.8%, falling to 1,321 from 1,551.

Hybrids continue to gain ground

The share of petrol-powered saloon cars fell to 35.6% in the first four months of 2026, down from 42.9% in the same period last year. Diesel vehicles also recorded a slight drop, from 9.0% in 2025 to 8.5% in 2026.

By contrast, electric saloon cars increased their share from 4.8% to 5.2%, while hybrid vehicles rose from 43.3% to 50.8%, accounting for just over half of saloon car registrations.

Overall motor vehicle registrations increased by 15.1% in January to April 2026, reaching 18,570 compared with 16,133 in the same period of 2025.
