A UN diplomatic source in Brussels has assessed that tangible results will be needed from the visit of UN Secretary-General António Guterres to Cyprus on 27-29 July, and from the accompanying trilateral meeting, before the process can advance to a five-party conference, according to the Cyprus News Agency (CNA).
Denial of reported plan
The same source denied recent press reports concerning the existence of a plan that had circulated in the media, stressing instead the UN's commitment to preparing for Guterres's visit to the island at the end of July and his meeting with the leaders of the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities.
Parallel diplomatic contacts
It was noted that this preparatory process also includes contacts by María Ángela Holguín, the UN Secretary-General's Personal Envoy on the Cyprus problem, who is engaging with officials in both Brussels and, on Friday, Ankara.
