A 35-year-old woman died on Saturday afternoon in the Gerolakkos area of the north, with her 41-year-old husband held as the suspect. According to reports, he admitted to the killing during questioning. The «district court» of Nicosia ordered his three-day detention on Sunday. It is the second femicide recorded in the north within five days, prompting a wave of reactions on social media.
What happened
According to Turkish Cypriot electronic media, the incident occurred on Saturday afternoon on the main Morphou–Nicosia road, near the Gerolakkos industrial area. The man was driving towards Nicosia with his wife as a passenger when a verbal altercation broke out between them.
A statement from the «police», reproduced by Turkish Cypriot outlets, said the vehicle then left the road and travelled roughly 110 metres into a field. There, the man allegedly struck his wife on the head with an electric cutting tool that was in the vehicle, causing her death.
Suspect's detention
Newer reports published on Sunday in the Turkish Cypriot press said the man was brought before the «district court» of Nicosia, which ordered his detention for three days at the request of the «police».
During the proceedings, the «police» said the suspect gave a handwritten statement after his arrest in which he allegedly admitted to killing his wife, striking her with his hands and, on the head, with the electric tool found in the vehicle. The «police» sought the three-day detention to continue the investigation and complete the post-mortem examination. The «prosecution» and the defence did not object to the request.
Public reaction
The case has triggered a wave of reactions on social media in the north, with posts focusing on the scale of violence against women and the need for more effective prevention measures.
The «mayor» of the north's Nicosia, Mehmet Harmancı, wrote on his personal social media account that "another woman was murdered before the eyes of the policy responsible for this country's security." He said violence against women is not being treated as a social problem and criticised the «government» of Ünal Üstel, arguing that policies introduced since 2018 to address gender-based violence had been weakened over the past four years. "Many of these murders and murder attempts could have been prevented," he said.
Second case in five days
The new case comes just five days after a femicide on 7 September in the occupied village of Agios Georgios, Karpasia, near Trikomo. In that case, a 61-year-old woman was stabbed to death by her 71-year-old former husband outside her home. After the killing, the suspect attempted to take his own life and was hospitalised under guard.
According to information released after that earlier case, there was a documented history of violence against the 61-year-old woman, along with prior legal proceedings and restraining orders. That case had already prompted strong reactions from organisations and bodies in the north, which had called for more effective measures to protect women from gender-based violence.
