Two children aged five and seven were among six pedestrians struck by a car on a road in Argaka, Paphos district, on Saturday evening. The 66-year-old driver has been arrested on a court warrant, after police said he gave a positive reading in a preliminary alcohol test.
How the collision happened
According to the Police, the collision occurred shortly before 6.30pm on Saturday. The 66-year-old was driving his car when, under circumstances that are being investigated, he lost control of the vehicle and struck the six people, who were walking.
The pedestrians are a man and a woman aged 42 and 37 and their two children, aged five and seven, as well as a man and a woman aged 65 and 64.
The driver continued on his way. About half a kilometre further on, again under circumstances that are being investigated, he lost control of the vehicle, which came to a stop after hitting a concrete manhole.
Condition of the injured
Police officers went to the scene to investigate. The six pedestrians were taken by ambulance to Paphos General Hospital.
The 65-year-old man, the 64-year-old woman and the 37-year-old woman were kept in hospital as a precaution for observation. Their condition is not life-threatening.
Alcohol test and arrest
Police officers carried out a preliminary alcohol test on the 66-year-old, which gave a positive reading. However, during the final breathalyser test, he did not provide a satisfactory sample.
As part of the police investigation, a court warrant was issued for his arrest. He was arrested and placed in custody on the basis of the warrant.
