200 litres of diesel seized at crossing after illegal refuelling detected

The Customs Department on Saturday seized 200 litres of diesel at the Ayios Dometios crossing point, following an inspection of a towing vehicle. Authorities found that the fuel tank was filled with diesel purchased from areas not under the control of the Republic.

According to the Customs Department, the driver admitted that he had refuelled at a petrol station in the occupied areas. Officers proceeded with the removal and seizure of the fuel, as well as the seizure of the vehicle.

The driver later accepted an out‑of‑court settlement, paying a fine of €800, after which the vehicle was returned to him.

The Customs Department reminds that it is strictly prohibited for professional drivers and owners of trucks and other commercial vehicles to refuel or transport additional quantities of fuel from the occupied areas.

It also reiterates that private vehicle users are not allowed to transport additional fuel containers from the occupied areas beyond the quantity that can be held in the vehicle’s fuel tank, due to non‑compliance with the provisions of the relevant European Directive, particularly regarding occasional transport.
