With a three month delay compared to the original schedule, Argyroupoleos Avenue is finally being handed over to the public, one of the most important road projects carried out in recent years in Nicosia. From 11am on Thursday 4 June, the road will be opened to traffic along its entire length and across all four lanes, linking Tseriou Avenue with Independence Avenue.

Three months late
The delivery of the project marks the end of a long period of inconvenience for residents, businesses and drivers who move through the area on a daily basis. The works caused significant traffic disruption, however the operation of the new road axis is expected to change the dynamics of travel to and from western Nicosia.

This is a project that had been on the state’s development priority list for more than two decades. The new road effectively connects the Nicosia – Limassol highway and the Latsia area with Strovolos and Lakatamia, creating a new alternative route of approximately three kilometres from the GSP stadium to Tseriou Avenue.

The advantages
Authorities estimate that the operation of the avenue will play a decisive role in reducing traffic congestion observed daily at the entrances to the capital, particularly during morning peak hours. The project is considered complementary to the ring road, which is being developed gradually and is expected to be completed in the coming years.
At the same time, it is expected to ease pressure on Spyrou Kyprianou Avenue, one of the most congested road arteries in Nicosia, where traffic pressure remains intense throughout the day.
A significant benefit is also expected for neighbourhoods in the area, as a large portion of through traffic will now be diverted to the new road, reducing movement through residential areas.

A long and difficult process
The implementation of the project was far from easy. Although its planning had been on the table for several years, procedures progressed slowly due to financial, technical and administrative difficulties before construction could begin.
At the same time, under the same construction contract, works are also progressing on the southern section of Tseriou Avenue, from the Theoktistos junction to its connection with the ring road. The completion of these works is considered crucial, as it will complete the new road network being created in the area.
With the opening of Argyroupoleos Avenue, an important step is taken towards upgrading mobility in western Nicosia. However, the full benefits of the project are expected to be realised once the works on Tseriou are completed, which will further strengthen connectivity between Strovolos and Lakatamia, while providing meaningful relief to the capital’s traffic problem.
