Force says investigation is at an early stage and declines further comment while inquiries continue.

Police have expressed their deep sorrow over the shooting in which a woman was seriously injured after allegedly being shot by her police officer husband, who later died by suicide.

In a statement, the force said its thoughts were with the woman, who remains in a critical condition, and with her family as they endure what it described as an extremely difficult time.

Police said the case is the subject of a full criminal investigation and stressed that any public comment on the circumstances surrounding the incident would be premature and could compromise the inquiry. As a result, they said no further details would be released until the investigation has progressed.

The statement also addressed public discussion surrounding the mental health and welfare of police officers.

Police said the force operates a dedicated Human Resources Support Unit staffed by registered psychologists, which provides psychological support and preventive wellbeing programmes for personnel. It added that established safeguarding procedures are activated whenever the necessary conditions are met.

The force said the full circumstances of the case would be established through the ongoing investigation and pledged to continue handling the matter with transparency and responsibility.
