The Food Connect app, developed as part of the European project LIFE Food Connect – Connecting Food Systems in Southern Europe, is now available for Android and iPhone, creating a direct link between businesses with surplus food and the organisations or citizens who can make use of it.
Through the platform, food businesses can offer products that will not be used or sold but remain safe and fit for consumption.
Food waste is a serious environmental, social and economic challenge. According to the latest available Eurostat figures, Cyprus produces around 286 kilogrammes of discarded food per inhabitant annually, the highest amount in the European Union. When food that could still be consumed ends up as waste, the water, energy, labour and natural resources required to produce and transport it are lost along with it. At the same time, many households and vulnerable social groups face economic pressures and difficulty accessing sufficient, quality nutrition.
How Food Connect works
Donors register on the FoodConnect electronic platform and log the food available, the quantity, the collection time and the location from which it can be collected.
Registered recipients, such as organisations and citizens, are notified via the mobile app of available donations, reserve the food they need and collect it free of charge from the location specified by the donor.
Food Connect's innovation lies in creating a single digital space for food donation in Cyprus. A process that until now relied mainly on phone calls, personal contacts and fragmented initiatives now takes an organised digital form.
Food Connect operates in Cyprus, Malta and Portugal and aims to help build a more sustainable, fair and resilient food system.
