Around 4,500 recipients of the monthly Mobility Allowance will receive a higher payment for July, along with a one-off retroactive amount backdated to 1 January 2026, the Department of Social Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities, under the Deputy Ministry of Social Welfare, has announced. The amounts will be credited to recipients' accounts on 29 July.
According to the announcement, the monthly Mobility Allowance rises this month by 33%, from €75 to €100, or from €150 to €200.
The one-off payment is worth up to €300 at most, depending on the size of the increase to the monthly allowance, that is, €25 or €50 multiplied by up to six months, from January to June, or a shorter period where applicable.
The Mobility Allowance is paid to people who are quadriplegic or blind, regardless of age or employment status; people with moderate or severe mobility impairments, moderate or severe intellectual disabilities, or severe psychiatric disabilities who are in work, in education or attending Day Centres; and people undergoing dialysis or living with thalassaemia who are participating in their treatment programme.
Around 600 quadriplegic people over 65 who were not previously receiving the Mobility Allowance will begin receiving it from next month.
People with moderate or severe intellectual disabilities or severe psychiatric disabilities who are in work or in education, and who now qualify for the allowance as a result of the change, can already submit their applications to the department.
In addition, people with disabilities who attend Day Centres and already receive a transport allowance do not need to take any action, and their increased allowance will in due course be transferred from the Welfare Benefits Administration Service to the Department of Social Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities.
The announcement adds that new applicants beginning to attend a Day Centre for the first time can submit their application for the Mobility Allowance to the department alongside their application for the Day Centre Participation Grant, which comes into effect in September.
