No electricity cuts are expected in Cyprus over the coming days, according to the Cyprus Transmission System Operator (TSOC), which said available generation capacity is sufficient to meet current demand.
Speaking to the Cyprus News Agency (CNA), TSOC spokeswoman Chara Kousiappa said the system currently has adequate coverage and sufficient reserve capacity to respond immediately to the potential loss of a generation unit.
She said maximum electricity demand in recent days had been around 1,200 megawatts (MW) during midday, while evening demand stood at between 950MW and 1,000MW.
These needs are being fully covered, she said, with available generation capacity exceeding 1,240MW.
The system also has sufficient reserve capacity to compensate for the loss of a generation unit without creating wider problems.
“We do not expect to have cuts or problems covering this demand,” Kousiappa told CNA.
She explained that if a generation unit were to fail and cause a disruption, any interruption would be limited to a few minutes while the system was rebalanced.
Demand falls after July peaks
Kousiappa said the current situation had improved compared with July, when record electricity demand placed greater pressure on the system and created challenges in meeting consumption.
Demand has now declined from those record levels, resulting in more satisfactory coverage, she said.
A further reduction in electricity demand is expected from Saturday, August 15, and this is forecast to continue into the following week.
The system will be reassessed after this period, Kousiappa said, particularly as people return from holidays and temperatures potentially change.
Authorities will continue to monitor demand and available generation capacity as conditions develop, she added.
