The share of Cyprus’s population aged 20 to 64 was higher than the EU average on 1 January 2025.

The share of Cyprus’s population aged 20 to 64 stood at 61.6% on 1 January 2025, according to Eurostat data. The corresponding rate in the European Union was 58.3%.

Eurostat examined the distribution of the working-age population across EU regions, based on level 3 of the nomenclature of territorial statistical units (NUTS 3).

In 39 EU regions, the share of people aged 20 to 64 was at least 63.0%. Twenty-two of these regions were in Germany, while the same category also included island regions of Spain, as well as certain capital regions and their surrounding areas.

The highest rates were recorded in the Copenhagen region of Denmark and on the Spanish islands of Ibiza and Formentera, where 68.9% of the population was aged 20 to 64. They were followed by Fuerteventura at 68.3% and Lanzarote at 67.3%, also in Spain.

At the other end of the scale, in 189 NUTS 3 regions of the EU, the working-age population accounted for less than 55.0% of the total population.

According to Eurostat, these areas were mainly rural and included regions in inland Portugal, large parts of rural France, most of eastern Germany, as well as rural areas in Bulgaria, Greece and the EU’s Scandinavian countries.

In six regions, less than half of the population was aged 20 to 64. These were Bornholm in Denmark; Creuse and Lot in south-western France; Etelä-Savo in south-eastern Finland; the Verviers region in Belgium; and France’s outermost region of Mayotte.
