The crucial role of professional accountants in the proper implementation of labour legislation was highlighted by the Minister of Labour and Social Insurance, Marinos Mousiouttas, at a conference organised by the Corporate Social Responsibility Committee of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Cyprus in cooperation with the Ministry and the Human Resource Development Authority.
In his address, according to a statement by the Ministry of Labour, Mr Mousiouttas said that “our goal is a fair labour market,” adding that the application of labour legislation is a key priority for ensuring the protection of workers’ rights and fair competition among businesses.
Referring to labour market data, the Minister noted that employment levels are at historic highs, exceeding the 80% target set for 2030. He added that Cyprus’s economy remains on a steady growth path, with unemployment standing at 4.3% in March 2026, significantly lower than the eurozone average of 6.2%.
He also stressed that professional accountants represent the first line of compliance for thousands of Cypriot businesses, describing their cooperation with the Ministry as strategically important for the effective enforcement of labour legislation.
According to the Ministry, the conference, held for the third consecutive year, aimed to inform participants on issues such as gender equality in employment, labour rights and employer obligations, subsidised schemes for hiring unemployed individuals, supported training and skills development programmes, as well as the application of new labour laws.
